Dear Ms. Ross:

My whole life has been based around the search for an adventurous experience in the wilderness and to help others find that same vision. I found this opportunity on Indeed.com and becoming a wilderness education guide is a position that intrigues me. I have confidence that I am a great fit for this position.

For the past four summers, I have been a white-water kayak instructor, rifle range instructor, mountain trip guide, and a general counselor for Winona Camps for Boys. I have plenty of hands-on experience educating these skills through utilizing a variety of teaching methods in a safe, engaging, fun, and controlled environment and then seamlessly translating them to higher risk environments such as river guiding. During these trips, I exercise responsible risk management skills through my confidence in my teachings, Maine Trip Leader and Wilderness First Aid certifications. Alongside my instructing responsibilities, I work with compassion as a counselor. I enjoy mentoring young boys in social skills, nature appreciation, responsibility, and open-mindedness. I believe with my skill and experience; I can be an asset to your company.

While my prior experience entails a vast amount of outdoor guiding knowledge, I would have gotten nowhere without my ability to work as a team with a positive and reinforcing attitude. When a task needs to be done, I can assure you that I make it a priority to see that the task gets completed efficiently and with care. I pride myself on my work ethic accompanied by a feeling of purpose for what I’m doing. I’ve always had a passion for working outdoors, creating meaningful connections, and passing along the knowledge I gain along the way.

Please feel free to reach out to me at your earliest convenience for the opportunity for an interview. I would love a chance to express my passion for this line of work in person. I can be found at jallsopp@une.edu or at (908-603-7193).

Thank you,

Jack Allsopp

Reflection of Peer Review

As I revise my cover letter, I am going to focus on a few different things. First, I tend to use some passive voice and some unnecessary phrases, which my peer reviewers pointed out to me. I will also look into my middle paragraph see if I can cut out anything as I can sometimes overwrite and think parts are important when they can be left out. The peer-review process was good for me as I also asked them to look out for some aspects of my writing that I know I can tend to struggle with, asking them to do this is an effective way to quickly find errors I am known to make.  The good part is, for the most part, I did a good job in the area’s I thought I would struggle, which were seeming over arrogant rather than confident, and in using passive voice rather than active voice. For editing others, I thought it was a good experience to see how others wrote theirs and to be able to see what they did well and the areas that they need improvement. When I review and workshop peers’ content, I really think I have good ideas to offer them but also know when not to try to fix something for the sake of the workshop. For example, in one of my peer’s cover letters, there were few minor changes I would make but overall the cover letter was really good and didn’t need much global content changes.

Reflection on Process

I really need this cover letter workshop as a person who has never written a cover letter before. Learning about writing the cover letter was of great value to me and I found the process of writing it to be pretty easy once I knew what I was doing and I could write one to my strengths. Having a bunch of people in the class give me feedback on it was also really helpful as I find that the more brains look at my writing the better I get at writing. I love getting feedback on how I can improve my writing in whatever capacity that entails. It was also great for me too see how others wrote their cover letters and be able to critique them and pull ideas on what I think they did good in there, but also realize what I disagree with in writing a cover letter. Doing my revisions based on the comments I received was also a good learning experience because was able to take some of their ideas and sort through what I thought would improve my cover letter. Taking an outside perspective is really good when it comes to improving the inside perspective. Overall, I feel really good about my cover letter assignment and feel that it prepared me to write an actual cover letter that I will be writing for my internship at Nor’easter News.
